Mike Johnson’s Hickory Toyota – Exploring the Museums of the Hickory Metro Area

Jan 17, 2020

Do you enjoy learning about different areas of life and culture? Take a trip around the Hickory Metro Area and enjoy a wide variety of museums.

Catawba Science Center

Do you and your family enjoy learning about the scientific phenomena that surround us daily? Take a trip to the Catawba Science Center on Third Ave Northeast in Hickory. The museum is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday. Admission costs $10 for adults. Active duty military members with ID, seniors, college students with ID, and children 3-18 enter for $8. Children under age 3 are free. Your general admission ticket includes a seat at the daytime planetarium show.

While you are at the museum, enjoy a variety of exhibits, including the salt and freshwater aquariums. The saltwater gallery features animals found off of the Carolina coast. The freshwater gallery gives you the chance to learn about waters native to the Amazon river. Beyond the animals, you can get hands-on with different exhibits in the gross labs while learning about diverse STEM careers.

Caldwell Heritage Museum

Turn a day of bad weather into the perfect time to learn about the history of the area with a visit to the Caldwell Heritage Museum. It is in Leonir and open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, they are open from 9 a.m. – 12 noon.

As you explore the many galleries in the museum, you get the chance to learn about the Native Americans who called the area home. You also have an opportunity to learn about the area during different historical periods, such as the formation of the country and the Civil War. Enjoy looking at toys from different periods as well as the clothes worn during those times. There is also an area dedicated to military history in the region if you need information for a school report. The reading room lets you sit and relax while reading over a variety of historical documents or catching up on your own research.

Ole Still Golf Club

In 2014, the Ola Still Golf Club located just outside Hickory, in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountain reopened after a complete renovation and rename, previously known as the Rivercrest Golf Club. This semi-private 18-hole golf course designed by Karl Litten, offers an amazing golfing experience on Sunday Bermudagrass. It has a course rating of 72.1 and a slope rating of 137. Besides golf, the club has a clubhouse with facilities for meetings, weddings or outings, along with a full-service bar.

These museums are wonderful to explore with friends and family. They can spark several different conversations while you enjoy the exhibits. They are also a great place to spend the day if the weather is less then ideal outside.
