No Treadmills, Please: 3 Different Ways to Get Fit in Hickory

You’ve committed to your health this year, and you’ve decided to get fit. If you’ve vowed to avoid the treadmill, you’re not alone. More and more people are getting off the belt and looking for new activities to get lean. Try these three different ways to get fit in Hickory, North Carolina.

Join a Sport’s League

Adult sports leagues around Hickory start-up during the fall season in September, and include softball, dodge ball, outdoor soccer, and kickball. While the winter season consists of the church and industrial basketball programs that begin in December. Youth leagues also include tackle football and indoor soccer programs.

The Highland Recreation Center at 1451 8th Street Drive NE offers a wide variety of sports teams for all ages to join, including pickleball, volleyball, home school PE, and basketball. Each summer and fall, the Hickory Foundation YMCA at 701 First St. NW offers free swim lessons to residents. Swimming is a marvelous exercise and is a fun activity for the whole family. The city of Hickory touts many neighborhood parks where you can get fit outdoors. Cliff Teague Park at 1125 C Ave. SE offers horseshoe pits, while Glenn C. Hilton, Jr. Memorial Park at 2000 6th Street NW features a lighted, paved walking trail, a 24-hole disc golf course, nature boardwalk, and canoe launch.

Discover the Alpine Tower ropes course and eight soccer fields at Henry Fork River Regional Recreation Park at 5655 Sweet Bay Lane or grab your bike and head to Hickory City Park at 1581 12th Street Drive NW. It offers access to a paved bikeway and the Lake Hickory Trail system of mountain biking tracks.
